Exciting changes are happening this summer. . .

Thanks to the candid feedback from our board members, dedicated volunteers, participating teachers, experienced educators and literacy supporters, The SAG-AFTRA Foundation is taking BookPALS to the next Level. Think of this as going from BookPALS 1.0 to BookPALS 2.0.

Stay tuned for announcements about our

  • New Online BookPALS Volunteer Portal

  • New BookPALS Reader Workshops

  • New BookPALS Program Calendar

  • New BookPALS Program Materials

These changes are being implemented to maintain the sustainability of the BookPALS program.  Please be patient with us.

All changes help us have a stronger impact on the children we serve.

BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) is a national program of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation where union actors, performers and entertainers volunteer their time to read aloud in classrooms in Title 1 elementary schools.

Research proves that reading aloud to a child improves listening comprehension skills, builds a capacity for critical thinking, increases vocabulary and context knowledge and sparks a positive association with reading.

BookPALS was founded in 1993 on the premise that children exposed to books at a young age will develop a love of reading that will last a life time.

Every month SAG-AFTRA Foundation BookPALS read to thousands of children in Florida, Los Angeles, New England, New York and San Francisco.

If you are a union performer and would like to become a BookPAL or you are a teacher or principal who would like to request a BookPAL for your classroom, contact us through your local branch listed here.

In addition to BookPALS, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation also serves a worldwide audience through its children’s literacy website Storyline Online.
