BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) is a national program of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation where union actors, performers and entertainers volunteer their time to read aloud in classrooms in Title 1 elementary schools.
Research proves that reading aloud to a child improves listening comprehension skills, builds a capacity for critical thinking, increases vocabulary and context knowledge and sparks a positive association with reading.
BookPALS was founded in 1993 on the premise that children exposed to books at a young age will develop a love of reading that will last a life time.
Every month SAG-AFTRA Foundation BookPALS read to thousands of children in Arizona, Florida, Los Angeles, New England, New York and San Francisco.
If you are a union performer and would like to become a BookPAL or you are a teacher or principal who would like to request a BookPAL for your classroom, contact us through your local branch listed here.
In addition to BookPALS, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation also serves a worldwide audience through its children’s literacy website Storyline Online.
