Oh, the People We Know!

March 4, 2010

Storyline Online is thrilled to add two new faces to our reading roster, the legendary Betty White and iCarly star Nathan Kress!

BettyWhitemediumsize_0Known for her reputation as one of entertainment’s most beloved, hilarious and enduring stars, a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and a well-known love of animals, Betty White recently brought her talent and charm to Storyline Online, reading Harry the Dirty Dog, the 1956 children’s favorite written by Gene Zion. The segment will debut on Storyline Online in the Spring, with Margaret Bloy Graham’s engaging illustrations brought to life through computer imagery.

Nathan Kress, known to countless fans as iCarly’s Freddie Benson, also gave the Foundation’s Actors Center a NathanKresscpdrszd_0visit, reading Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go for a Live Stream Special Event honoring Read Across America week. The young actor’s enthusiasm for learning and literacy was shared with viewers and classrooms across the nation through online streaming technology, and an archived recording is viewable in the Foundation’s Special Events Video Gallery.

The two actors join an impressive group of volunteer readers, all of whom have donated their time and talent to bring books to life in support of young minds and the SAG Foundation’s Children’s Literacy Initiative. Celebrities including Jane Kaczmarek, Bradley Whitford, Jason Alexander, Pamela Reed, Esai Morales, CCH Pounder, James Earl Jones and Elijah Wood can be seen and heard at the site reading quality children’s literature aloud in imaginatively-produced segments accessible online twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and free of charge. Additional supplemental activities for each book add to the program’s educational value.

Yet despite the success Storyline Online continues to have in reaching children, educators and parents as a highly effective learning tool (with more than three million hits per month), the future of the interactive website has been jeopardized by mounting costs and faces the possibility of closure in the coming year.
