Storyline Online Releases ‘Going Down Home with Daddy’ Read by Jeffrey Wright for Black History Month
Press Release
In honor of Black History Month, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Emmy®-nominated children’s literacy program, Storyline Online, has released Going Down Home with Daddy, read by acclaimed actor Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction, Westworld, The Batman). This read-aloud is now available at storylineonline.net and on YouTube.
“This book is a heartfelt reminder of the traditions that shape us and the importance of honoring those who came before us,” said Jeffrey Wright. “It was a privilege to bring this story to life for Storyline Online, and I hope it resonates with families and educators during Black History Month and beyond.”
Written by Kelly Starling Lyons, illustrated by Daniel Minter and published by Peachtree, Going Down Home with Daddy is a Coretta Scott King Honor Book that beautifully explores the power of family, tradition, and African American heritage. In the story, young Lil Alan joins his relatives for a cherished reunion at Granny’s house, where he learns how history, culture, and personal expression connect generations.
“Storyline Online is dedicated to sharing stories that reflect the rich diversity of experiences, voices, and histories that shape our world,” said Courtney B. Vance, Chairman of the Board President of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. “Jeffrey Wright’s reading of Going Down Home with Daddy is a beautiful tribute to family and heritage, and we are proud to share this story with children everywhere.”
As part of Storyline Online’s commitment to literacy, Going Down Home with Daddy includes a free supplementary teacher’s guide for 1st-3rd grades that aligns with Common Core Standards, aimed at strengthening children’s reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Themes of the book include family traditions, remembrance, giving, family unity, heritage, land, and reunions.
In addition to Jeffrey Wright, Storyline Online features over 90 acclaimed actors reading beloved children’s books aloud, including Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Rami Malek, Chris Pine, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Yeoh and many more.
